Where to start...

Post by doink on Thu May 21, 2009 1:46 pm

Well, to kick off with, as you all know, we out-grew the old server/hosting agreement... I kinda had an incling we'd be on the move anyway - 3 outages in 3 weeks never bodes well and this was the icing on the cake. As some of you know, Tasha and I were onto this error within seconds and I spent two hours on the phone and chat support until we got to the point where Urchin and I agreed it was time to jump ship and take you all with us.

Interesting fact number 1: I secretly named the old server HMS Sieve, after the old ship "HMS Sieve", which sank shortly after leaving Portsmouth.

So, last night I managed to get the database from the old hosts and grabbed all the data I could. This was about 23:30 and I was due to be up at 6 to get ready and go off to Basildon to do some filming for another job I'm working on. Tasha had gone to bed at about 23:00 for what she described as "me time". I didn't ask but I glared enviously in her direction.

Interesting fact number 2: AAA batteries seem to cost us a lot of money and we go through a lot of them. I'm not sure how.

So, at that point I went to bed. We had a new server being built overnight to my specifications and geeky stuff (DNS) being propergated. Our new host - www.zernebok.com - were pretty quick - thank god for knowing company directors of places!

I was up and out by 07:15 today and had to spend the day in Basildon. I got all my filming and sound bites done and met some interesting people. I working with a group called Options for Independent Living and I advise on buses and trains and planes and taxis and accessibility and work in partnership with people like First Buses, National Express and County Councils to get a successful outcome. It's a dirty job but someone has to drink the coffee.

Interesting fact number 3: Did you ever think how disorientating it could be for someone who is visually impaired to get on a bus, lifting a foot expecting a step and getting a low-floor bus by surprise? Today was Shocked eye-opening, even for me.

I got home at 18:00, washed up, cooked and have been on this since about 19:30. I've got just a few little bits left to do until I go into testing mode. I'm out again at 07:00 tomorrow too and won't be home until the afternoon...

Thanks for bearing with me. Thanks to Natasha (tashaandbump) for putting up with this too - she's a real hero to you all. She selflessly is keeping children occupied now so as to allow me to work in peace in the bedroom without interuption. She's a true star and (as described to me earlier by my lead-manager at ECC) a really good egg (!!)... Tasha- I love you princess.

I will keep you up to date... just - don't get upset if it takes a while... it's like ttc'ing - you can't rush perfection!

All my best,

Doinkx
